Why you should use Fillers instead of Botox

By: Dr. Marcelo Antunes

Injectable fillers and Botox can both improve wrinkles, but they achieve that in a completely different way. You should think of Botox as a muscle relaxant that will treat wrinkles by preventing the muscles to fully contract and therefore prevent the skin to fold. Fillers on the other hand, will actually plump the wrinkle and not interfere with muscle action.

There are a variety of injectable wrinkle fillers that can give you a more youthful look by volumizing the treated area. Most of these fillers will fill folds and wrinkles in less than thirty minutes with the results lasting from 4 months to more than a year. Depending on the area being treated, you may need one or more injections to achieve your goal. These fillers can also be used as volume enhancers for different areas of the face from lifting cheeks, jawlines and temples and filling out saggy hands and thin lips.

The filler treatment is a quick and easier alternative to get a more complex procedure done. Not every filler is right for every type of wrinkle and its best to use the correct one, so be sure to consult with a board certified specialist on the right filler. At the Northwest Facial Aesthetic Center we have a few different types of wrinkle fillers:

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers:

  • Restylane
  • Juvederm
  • Voluma

Biostimulant Filler:

  • Sculptra

Don’t get an injectable from sources outside of a doctor’s office, know what you are being injected with and ask if the filler used is FDA approved. Consult your specialist here at Northwest Facial Aesthetic Center your one-on-one consultation puts you in the right hands to make the correct decision on the type of filler you want and need.

Botox by the Decade

A woman will start to notice small signs of aging in her thirties. The fine lines at the corners of the mouth, the wrinkles on the forehead and the crow’s feet at the edge of the eyes. At the sight of these mocking signs, women look to anti-aging regimens to keep a youthful glow. Here is a decade-by decade guide from Dr. Marcelo Antunes on the best ways to appear younger.

  • 20s and 30s– Women should look into anti-aging products and promote basic skincare. Keeping the face moisturized and using sun protection slows down aging. Some woman choose early “prejuvenation”, where one starts Botox procedures before they start seeing signs of aging.
  • Late 30sBotox is generally started at this age to keep future wrinkles and lines from emerging.
  • 40s– Along with basic skincare, anti-aging products and Botox, Chemical Facial Peels are recommended for continued youthful look.
  • Late 40sFillers are added along with Botox to fill in lines. Skin care and sun protection continues.
  • 50s and 60s– At this point if a participant wants more done, Cosmetic Surgery is the next step. If not, a woman can continue her regimen on Botox, Fillers and other non-surgical procedures.

A woman can start at their own pace with natural preventative measures such as not smoking, using basic skin care and keep overall good health. The earlier one starts Botox, the better the body responds to the facial change. Once started, a woman can continue the procedures periodically if they so desire or stop without any negative side effects. The procedure only turns back the clock, it doesn’t keep it from moving forward.

Should I do Fillers, Botox or have a Facelift?

With all the hype over the Internet and television, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and not know where to start in your journey to improve your appearance. According to recent statistics from the American Society for Plastic Surgery, there were over 15 million cosmetic surgeries performed in 2014 – up 3% from the previous year. Due to the increase in demand, the industry responds with what seems like an endless array of new products and procedures. However, it is very important to maintain a skeptical attitude and carefully evaluate new advances. What I have found is that when the patient is well educated in all the different available procedures and is involved in the decision process, they can be better prepared to discern the difference between fickle and reliable information.

As technology and surgical techniques evolve and improve, more people are asking for quicker procedures that involve a short recovery and still achieve long-lasting results. I am a big advocate and frequently perform non-invasive-minimal-downtime procedures such as soft tissue fillers, Botox injections, chemical peels and lasers. These are key components for a complete treatment and prevention of facial aging. So why would someone bother doing a facelift? Why go through the downtime? Should I just do fillers, Botox, lasers or a chemical peel? To answer these questions, we need to understand the aging process and the limitations of each treatment option.

As we go through the 40s and 50s, facial aging starts to take place. The skin loses its elasticity and wrinkles start to appear, the muscular layers and ligaments become laxed and the bony structures of the face show some signs of contraction. Despite the fact that everybody ages differently, the tissues of the face and neck start to sag in predictable ways, producing looseness in the neck skin, jowls, sunken cheeks and deep folds on the corners of the mouth. Dermal fillers can work fabulously camouflaging the contour irregularities and lessening the deep facial folds. Botox can prevent wrinkles. Lasers and chemical peels can invigorate the skin. These options are wonderful and avoid downtime, but they definitely cannot do what a facelift can. A good facelift should address the muscular layer of the face and restore its position to a more youthful one. These will correct the neck lines and folds, jowls, reestablishing cheek contour and soften the folds around the mouth. In addition, tightening the muscles leaves the skin without any tension and avoids the dreaded pulled look. A well done facelift remains the gold standard for facial rejuvenation and should not be feared.

The Perfect Nose? It’s the One that fits your Face.

By: By Dr. Marcelo Antunes

Throughout the ages, scientists and scholars have been absorbed in the pursuit of what constitutes beauty and the ideal facial and nasal proportions. These challenges date back to Egyptians, Greeks and Renaissance artists. Over the years, “an ideal nose” has been defined and would determine, for example, how turned up the nose should be. In women, the angle between the lip and the nose would be about 95 to 110 degrees and in men, about 90 to 100 degrees. Also, other mathematical proportions determine how far the tip should project from the face were also deemed ideal. That sounds a pretty straightforward way of determining what the perfect nose is. However, despite this classic set of principles, beauty remains an elusive concept. Especially in such a globalized world where individual tastes, cultural influences, modern style and the media (and social media) can all overshadow the original formula.

So, what will make a beautiful nose? What makes it attractive? Is there a perfect nose? These are trick questions. Beauty encompasses not only the proportions and the angles I mentioned, but also, and most importantly, harmony and balance between the facial features and how everything fits together. The Greeks and Egyptians had their perfect nose, as did the Romans, the Koreans and Turks. Our society too, is no exception. We have our own thoughts on what makes a beautiful nose, both for men and for women. In traditional rhinoplasty surgery, the simplest answer was that a beautiful nose is straight, symmetrical and relatively small. However, a quick look at some beauty icons can illustrate that there is more to beauty than math. Gisele Bundchen and Kate Beckinsale, have two very different noses. But both noses are really beautiful and complement their facial features.

Closely related to the nose, an important, and often overlooked feature is the chin. Likewise it should fit with the other facial proportions. Naturally it should be delicate and round in women. In men, the chin is wider, forming a square shape. A small chin can sometimes create the impression of a bigger nose. And a bigger chin can make a beautiful nose look unattractive. This goes to show that balance and harmony is more important than any mathematical formula when taken isolated.

Nonetheless, today, rhinoplasty surgeons avoid the one-size-fits-all approach. Youthfulness and attractiveness is still a common goal, but the latest trends highlight the patient preference, delicacy and the patient’s overall facial features, and very importantly, the patient’s ethnicity. The surgeon cannot rely solely on classic aesthetic standards, which was primarily Caucasian. Today we understand that there are many types of attractive noses, some created by birth, and others by rhinoplasty. And the smallest change can produce huge perceptual impacts; Rhinoplasty is always quoted to be a surgery of millimeters. And always remember: the perfect nose is the one that fits your face.
