Eyelid Surgery

What is Eyelid Surgery?

A procedure that restores the upper and lower eyelids to their natural, youthful appearance. It is designed to lift and smooth the upper and lower eyelids’ skin and fat (if needed). In addition, it has the potential to improve a patient’s visual field.

Why Eyelid Surgery?

The eyes are the most engaging and expressive area of the face and the first facial feature that is noticed by others. While inviting eyes are fundamental to a youthful appearance, they are also one of the first parts of the face to show signs of aging. As a result, it can be frustrating when aging begins to make the face look tired, disinterested, unhealthy and ultimately much older than it is.

While aging is unavoidable, a blepharoplasty can rejuvenate the appearance of the eyes and face as a whole. Reasons that patients seek out this procedure include:

Skin sagging
Lax tissue
Protruding fat lines

Procedure and Results

Our trained physicians understand that every patient has different eyelid contours and creases, and they tailor each procedure based on these characteristics. Each has thorough knowledge of the eyelid and facial anatomy and will perform a detailed examination before performing the procedure.

During an upper eyelid lift, incisions are hidden within the upper eyelid crease. Eyelid skin excess is removed and fat is repositioned or removed (if necessary) to rejuvenate the upper eyelid.

During a lower eyelid lift, incisions are made on the inside of the eyelid and occasionally under the lash line. If excess skin is present, it is removed and the “bags” (fatty tissues) are either repositioned or removed to restore the eyelid contour to a more youthful appearance.

It’s preferable that the patient has someone at home for the first 24 hours after surgery until the swelling subsides and vision turns to normal.

  • Clear Vision 24 Hours
  • Suture Removal 4-5 Days
  • Return to Work 1 Week
  • Return to Physical Activities 2 Weeks
  • 75% Visible Result 3 Weeks
  • 100% Visible Result 2-3 Months

When properly performed, blepharoplasty is a great procedure that restores a youthful and energetic appearance – eliminating the fatigued and uninterested look common to aging. The procedure usually takes 1-3 hours and can be performed at Northwest ENT Surgery Center. A combination of local anesthesia and sedation is most often used, although it can be performed under general anesthesia. Most patients return to work in less than 1 week and are back to full physical activities in 2 weeks.
