Composed of poly-L-lactic acid, Sculptra® gradually corrects depressions and hollows on the face by stimulating collagen production to replace fat (volume) that has been lost. Designed to improve the sunken and/or hollow appearance in the temples, cheeks and lower facial regions, Sculptra® is an excellent filler.
During treatment, Sculptra® will be injected into targeted areas with a fine needle. A local or topical anesthetic may be administered for the patient’s comfort before injection under the skin. The process typically takes about 30 minutes to complete, but this can vary depending on the number of injections administered. Multiple treatment sessions are typically necessary to achieve optimal results and are performed every 6-8 weeks. Patients with severe facial fat loss may even require 3-6 treatment sessions.
The improvement in facial volume happens slowly over the course of a few weeks as new collagen continues to grow. Patients initially feel that the volume has been restored, but this is usually secondary to swelling that goes away in couple of days. Results can be long-lasting and, in some cases, even extend up to 2 years. When the effects of Sculptra® eventually begin to fade, maintenance treatments may be necessary.
Most patients are able to return to normal daily routines after their treatment, but some minor swelling, redness, and bruising can typically be expected for a few days following the procedure.
